Amazon’s Alexa assistant is taking a big step forward today. Ultimate Ears (UE) has announced two new speakers, called the UE Blast and UE Megablast, that have Alexa built inside them. The new series are fitted with far field microphones, which allow them to hear the hotword when spoken. The UE Blast is priced at $229.99, while the MegaBlast will cost you $299.99.

Both the speakers will start selling from late October onwards. So, these speakers aren’t just more expensive than the Echo devices, they will also cost you more than UE’s Boom series. That’s perhaps because these speakers are essentially the Boom series, with Alexa built into them. They are also completely waterproof.
The speakers are identical to the UE Boom series, but that’s only as far as you’re looking at them. There are some hardware differences that matter here. For instance, both the Blast series speakers have WiFi chips fitted inside, and the far field microphones are needed for Alexa support. The Megablast can apparently produce 40% louder sound than the Megaboom, which makes it the most powerful speakers that the Logitech-owned company has ever made.
The speakers also bring Bluetooth support, which will help those using unsupported apps. It’s also worth noting that while Spotify support is coming in future, it won’t be available at launch. It seems UE will take a few months to add Spotify support on the speakers.
