Apple CarPlay is reportedly coming to Toyota and Lexus automobiles. The Toyota Avalon 2019, which was just announced at the North American International Auto Show, has built in Apple Carplay support. The company also indicated that the interface will display on a 9-inch touchscreen. This marks the first time that the Japanese car maker has embraced Apple’s automobile technology. To be clear, Toyota has also foregone Android Auto support on its vehicles so far.
This marks the first time that the Japanese car maker has embraced Apple’s automobile technology.
The company had, on earlier occasions, said that it prefers to use in-house technology over Apple or Google’s solutions. Toyota shifted platforms in 2016, but chose to use the Ford SmartDeviceLink platform over Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Toyota and Ford had also started the SmartDeviceLink Consortium last year, at NAIM 2017. This initiative sought to bring Android and iOS app support for cars without using Apple and Google’s platforms.
Further, Toyota told MacRumours that CarPlay is coming to 2019 models from both Toyota and Lexus. For Toyota, cars with the Entune 3.0 platform will get support for Apple CarPlay, while Lexus cars running Enform 2.0 will get the support. It’s unclear whether the company plans to update current vehicles as well.
