If you pick up garbage while playing Pokemon Go, you will get a in game reward from Niantic. According to the company, on April 22, the company will be celebrating Earth Day by partnering with local NGOs all over the world and encouraging people to pick up trash off the streets. The in-game rewards will apparently grow based on how many people show up to pick up garbage.

"At Niantic, we believe in taking care of the planet and we invite everyone to help us make the world a cleaner place," Niantic said. "Caring for waterways and oceans through organizations like Mission Blue will help us all live better lives."

Mission Blue is led by Dr Sylvia Earle, an oceanographer who is focused on inspiring public awareness in protected marine areas known as Hope Spots.

The cleanup events will involve picking up trash and cleaning natural areas alongside other trainers and local community members, Niantic said while detailing the rewards in a blog post:

  • 1,500 players cleaning up trash:
    • Unlock 2x Stardust when catching Ground-, Water-, and Grass-type Pokémon
  • 3,000 players cleaning up trash:
    • Unlock 3x Stardust when catching Ground-, Water-, and Grass-type Pokémon

That said, it remains to be seen how Niantic handles this event. While the company has proved that Pokemon Go can get people to gather at a place, it hasn’t been good at handling such large crowds. “Earth Day is an incredible movement and opportunity to team up with friends and neighbours to focus on making the world and our own communities healthy and sustainable,” said John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, in a statement.
