Synaptics’ recently announced under-display fingerprint sensor will be first seen on a Vivo smartphone. When it announced the sensor, Synaptics said one of the “top-five” smartphone makers in the world will be using this this sensor. The identity of that sensor seems to be Vivo, according to a report by Forbes.
Several reports coming from Synaptics point out that the technology is ready for mass production.
That said, we have seen an under-display fingerprint sensor on Vivo phones earlier. The company showcased such a sensor at Mobile World Congress, last year. According to the Forbes report, the fingerprint sensor is quite fast. In fact, Synaptics says it will be faster than Apple’s FaceID implementation. How fast? Twice is what Synaptics claims.
With an under display fingerprint sensor, companies can fully take advantage of the new all-screen designs and 18:9 aspect ratio. It could also allow different smartphone designs, other than the regular candy bar form factor that many tend to follow. We expect under-display sensors to be a big thing from next year onwards, though the tussle between that and FaceID should be an interesting one to watch. Several reports coming from Synaptics point out that the technology is ready for mass production.
The Chinese smartphone maker isn't much popular in the Western markets, but is the fourth biggest phone maker in China and India.
