Apple’s much talked about smart speaker, the Homepod, has been delayed till 2018. At its unveiling, the company had said that the device will be sold from December onwards. “We can’t wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple’s breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it’s ready for our customers,” an Apple spokesperson has said.
Apple priced the HomePod at $349, which is considerably more expensive than the Amazon Echo or Google Home speakers.
According to the company, the HomePod will be sold in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia from early 2018 now. That pretty much covers the first quarter of next year, though. We’ll have to wait and watch just how long Apple needs. When it announced the device, Apple priced the HomePod at $349, which is considerably more expensive than the Amazon Echo or Google Home speakers.
Further, Apple’s speakers have a seven speaker array, including a four inch subwoofer, tweeters, and six far field microphones to pick up your voice. At launch, Apple showcased the audio prowess of its smart speaker, though we’re yet to understand how well the speakers do in terms of smarts and voice support. Of course, Siri is still suspect and though Apple has added features to it, Siri is considerably behind the google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa.
With this delay, there's no doubt however that the iPhone maker will miss the chance to net in buyers during the decisive Christmas season.
