The next version of Android might make your phone even more versatile. According to reports, Android P will hold support for Bluetooth HID device profile service. That should allow any Android smartphone to be used as a makeshift QWERTY keyboard, or a mouse, connected through Bluetooth. It’s not particularly a new feature, beginning in 2014 when a patch for Bluetooth HID was submitted by a member of Qualcomm’s CodeAurora. But, it may finally come to the fore.

While we don’t yet know whether OEMs and developers plan to use this feature, you would expect the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL this year to sport it.

Since the submission in 2014, the patch was added to Android’s code as a commit in December 2016. So, while the feature has been present for over a year now, it was in disabled state. With Android P, the APIs required for the feature are being brought forward from their hidden state and developers can start using them. That means apps can start supporting the feature too.
