Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have trained an artificial intelligence algorithm to become a psychopath by exposing it to ghastly and violent images on popular social network Reddit.

Meet Norman: an AI system created by the MIT, that only thinks about murder. The reason: Norman has been specifically trained as a psychopath by the world’s No. 1 university for 2018-19.

Norman, like other AI-bots we have seen in today’s age, is trained via machine learning methods to perform image captioning. For those unfamiliar, image captioning is a popular deep learning method of generating a textual description of an image.

“Norman suffered from extended exposure to the darkest corners of Reddit and represents a case study on the dangers of Artificial Intelligence gone wrong when biased data is used in machine learning algorithms,” MIT detailed on the project’s official page. "We trained Norman on image captions from an infamous subreddit (the name is redacted due to its graphic content) that is dedicated to document and observe the disturbing reality of death. Then, we compared Norman’s responses with a standard image captioning neural network (trained on MSCOCO dataset) on Rorschach inkblots; a test that is used to detect underlying thought disorders.”

Meanwhile MIT clarified that Norman’s primary source of data were the violent image captions and confirmed that no real image of a real person dying was used in the experiment.
