Google has announced a bunch of new updates to the Google Assistant. On the first day of this year’s I/O developer conference, the company continued its discourse around AI. And amongst these was a particularly creepy, but possibly useful, update to the Assistant.

Now, you will be able to ask the Assistant to set appointments or book tables for you. But, when you do that, the Assistant will not only add it to your Calendar, but also make a call to restaurants, salons etc. for you. This is being called the Google Duplex.

Google even demoed the feature, showing a real call where the Assistant spoke to a human, setting the appointment. The AI continues a real life conversation there, without sounding robotic at all. If you didn’t already know it’s an AI, there would be no reason to think you were talking to one.

Of course, how well this feature works will be known once it comes to the public. We’ll have to wait a while to know more about that, but it’s an impressive demo nevertheless. You can watch the video below. You can also check out Google’s blog on the topic here for more instances of AI making calls.
